We are often asked for the number of new business start-ups – so we put together this page for anyone who is just a little bit curious about such things. Keep in mind these numbers are changing daily. Not all of our statistics are available at this time. 

The total number of "active" listings as of January 1, 2011 is as follows:

Vermont domestic = 14,740; 

Nonprofits = 8,180; 

Foreign Corporations = 8,665; 

Trade Names = 48,944; 

LLC = 20,041

Current Year Activity:

General - most corporations fall into this category.
Professional - designed for professions that require a license,ie engineers, doctors, etc. 
Close - limits the number of shareholders and often operates without aboard of directors.
Nonprofit - mutual and public benefit charitable organizations.
Foreign - corporations chartered in other states and doing business in Vermont.
Trade Names - small businesses, sole proprietors - often referred to as a dba.
Limited Liability Company (LLC) - has some privileges of a corporation, but is not a corporation.
Dissolved - domestic corporations that are no longer doing business.
Withdrawn - foreign corporations that no longer do business in Vermont.

"Active" means the company has filed needed reports and renewals and is currently in good standing. The number of terminated corporations or small businesses renewals are not available at this time.
